If it’s your first time in the Northern Alps, Mt. Jonen is a highly recommended hike. Starting from Tokusawa, take the trail that ascends along the Nagakabe Ridge. After coming out the forest, it’s just another quick climb to the summit of Mt. Chogatake. The expansive views from atop this mountain are astounding. Chogatake Mountain Hut near the summit is a good place to spend the night.
On your second day, hike along an open ridge above the tree line. The views are magnificent on a clear day. Cross a hilly forest and a rock ridge to reach Mt. Jonen. From the summit, take the trail towards Mitsumata down to Jonengoya Mountain Hut where you can spend the night.
On your last day, descend from Jonen-nokkoshi towards Ichinosawa. Before descending, call for a taxi pick-up as there is no cell phone reception at the bottom. Be careful after heavy rains as the creek may flood.
